Many of us feel depressed at times. For most of us this is a transitory
feeling of sadness or feeling low. Sometimes we refer to it as the 'blues'
or melancholia.
However, true depression is not merely a feeling of sadness. It is a more
debilitating condition that affects suffers more severely.
Depression can seriously affect a person's life, health and well being.
It appears to be a bio-chemical disorder or condition that makes the
sufferer prone to low energy and feelings of lethargy. It can also be
associated with numbness and pain.
Sometimes, the depression periods can be alternating with periods
of high energy and 'zeal'. Such a condition is sometimes referred to as
'manic depression'. It too is a bio chemical imbalance or condition.
A lot of people appear to suffer from a form of depression during the
winter months. This has become recognised as Seasonally affected disorder or
seasonal affective depression or S.A.D. It is also sometimes known as the
winter blues.
