Aromatherapy is the use of
scent for creating or maintaining well-being and health. Aromatherapy most
often employs the use of essential oils, mainly of plant origin. These oils
are usually applied by an aromatherapist using massage.
Aromatherapy is a very
sensual form of alternative medicine. It can be practised in either a
professional setting or by the casual user at home. However only qualified
aromatherapists can practice the technique professionally.
There are a wide range of
essential oils used in aromatherapy. A few drops of the essential oil are
added to a 'carrier' oil, such as almond oil. Which is then massaged into
the client.
Alternatives to massage
include burning in an oil lamp or similar. This releases the scent of the
essential oils into the air surrounding the client.
The most commonly used
essential oil is lavender oil which is often used for its soothing or
calming effect.
In recent years,
aromatherapy has changed and it has now become synonymous with massage. It
has also unfortunately acquired a reputation as a therapy for women only and
many classes training aromatherapists allow women only onto the course.
